Pop! Et Cetera
Winnipeggers are no strangers to festivals. Folk lovers congregate at Birds Hill Park every summer, punks have Arson Fest, sound art aficionados have Send + Receive, electronic music addicts have had Brainfest the last couple years, metal heads have the Manitoba Metal Fest, jazz junkies get their yearly fix in the spring and hip hop fans have Freestyle - but indie rockers tend to be left out. Looking to fill the void, Pop! Et Cetera is a new music festival taking place Oct. 7 to 18 at various venues around the city. Featuring performances by Edmonton electro-party band Shout Out Out Out Out, Regina popsters Library Voices, Halifax indie-rockers In-Flight Safety, Montreal proto-punks Oromocto Diamond, ex-Winnipegger vitaminsforyou, Montreal’s underrated Young Galaxy and Vancouver’s Bend Sinister, along with local acts Oldfolks Home, LeBeato, Get Famous!, Not Animals and We Eat Meat. DJs Rob Vilar, Jamall Knight, Mikey MMMuscles and Abito Tokado are also scheduled to perform. Better Swimmers has put together a free digital sampler featuring some of the bands taking part in the inaugural festival.
loudQUIETloud
Filmed during the Pixies’ 2004 reunion tour, loudQUIETloud follows the iconic alt-rock group on a quick warm-up tour through Canada and the U.S. before its headlining gig at California’s Coachella festival. Although the tension between the band members is well-documented, the film shows just how dysfunctional their personal relationships are, despite the fact it has been 11 years since they performed together. While they’re still able to create magic onstage, it’s apparent they won’t be hanging out together off the road. Filmed by award-winning directors Steven Cantor and Matthew Galkin, “the result is an insider’s perspective on the Pixies, their relationships with family, fans and each other, and the combustible dynamic when the four members come together on stage.”
