Vice turns 15
It’s hard to believe, but former Montreal-based street-culture magazine Vice is turning 15 years old. Known for its sharp, sarcastic, anything-goes writing style, Vice has never pulled any punches; even in the early days, it was a mix of politically driven pieces and stories you weren’t going to read anywhere else. Over the years, Vice has forayed into music, film, TV, streaming video, books and clothing, but the magazine (and website) have been the primary focus for founders Suroosh Alvi, Shane Smith and Gavin McInnes. Although McInnes has since left to start Street Carnage and do viral videos for Teva (WTF was he thinking?), the magazine is still turning out cutting-edge gonzo journalism and pissing people off. To celebrate turning a government grant that was intended to reduce unemployment and provide community service into a mini-publishing empire, Vice plans to upload an issue from 1994 that was never published because “we guess the editors were too stoned that month to actually finish it or something.” Expect Vice’s time machine to give you interviews with O.J.’s pal Kato Kaelin, lo-fi slackers Pavement, never-before-published photos of ChloĆ« Sevigny and even a story on a ‘zine about killing Evan Dando.
Stuff My Girlfriend Says
A few weeks ago the Internet was buzzing about Twitter user @shitmydadsays. While you can still kill hours on the web with Justin and his 72-year-old dad, you might want to split your time with Stuff My Girlfriend Says. It might not turn out gems such as, “I wanted to see Detroit win. I’ve been there. It’s like God took a shit on a parking lot. They deserve some good news,” but you can still vicariously live through this guy and wonder why you didn’t think of this idea first.
Quick Hits
MP3 of the Week: Jesus Lizard - Mouth Breather (Goat reissue)
Jesus Lizard was easily one of the fiercest and most important bands of the ’90s, and Touch & Go have decided to remaster and reissue the first four Jesus Lizard albums to coincide with the band’s recent North American tour. With no Winnipeg (or Minneapolis) dates on the horizon, this may be the closest you get to David Yow and the Lizard.
Video of the Week: Four-year-old Drummer
Some kids are experts at Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Others play the drums.
