MyWinnipeg.com - December 4/08

Can’t decide what to do this weekend? With rising country stars, angry punk rockers, a soprano singer and Kayne West’s tour DJ all in town, there are lots of good reasons to head out into the cold.

Friday

Rise Against

w/ Sage Francis and Thursday
MTS Centre
300 Portage Avenue
$36.50 - $39.50 at Ticketmaster

Fueled by eight years with an inept President and a desire for change, political punk rockers Rise Against roll into The Phone Booth on Friday night with rapper Sage Francis and post-hardcore rockers Thursday backing them up. Touring in support of their new album, Appeal to Reason, Rise Against should blow the roof off the MTS Centre with their fierce live show.

Bryce Pallister
w/ Heather Longstaffe
The Park Theatre
698 Osborne Street
$15 at the door

CD release parties happen nearly every week and sometimes it’s tough to get noticed. That’s not the case for Portage la Prairie country singer Bryce Pallister. Set to release his first album, RDY 2GO, this Friday at the cozy Park Theatre, Pallister has generated the type of industry buzz that most artists only dream of. He has already done a successful showcase during the Canadian Country Music Awards and is hoping this new album will slingshot him into the national spotlight. Catch him before the rest of Canada discovers what this talented Prairie boy is all about.

Saturday

A-Trak
w/ Jamal Knight, Freya 519
Event Exchange Centre
291 Bannatyne Ave
$25 at The Urban Bakery and The Urban Boutique

Few DJs have a resume as good as Montreal wonder-kid Alain Macklovitch aka DJ A-Trak. Along with winning his first DMC world championship at the tender age of 15, A-Trak is the only DJ to have won all three major DJ competitions and the first DJ to win five world championships. After dominating the competitive DJ scene, A-Trak retired by the time he was 18 from battle DJing to focus on his own music, his labels and touring the world. Now 26, he is a member of The Allies supergroup and is mega-star Kayne West’s touring DJ. Although he still showcases his quick-handed scratching, expect a DJ set heavily rooted in speaker shredding Miami bass, old school hip hop, forward thinking electro and lots of heavily remixed club friendly mashups.

Sammy Bananas
w/ The Hosers
Hi-Fi Club
108 Osborne, 2nd Floor
$5 at the door before midnight

In a strange and unfortunate booking coincidence, Fool’s Gold producer/DJ Sammy Bananas is in town on the same night as his label buddy A-Trak. If you plan ahead and time it right, you may get to catch parts of each set.

Sarah Brightman
w/ Mario Frangoulis
MTS Centre
300 Portage Avenue
$45 - $79 at Ticketmaster

Can’t make it to New York? Broadway veteran Sarah Brightman will be at the MTS Centre on Saturday to showcase her unique take on opera, pop and classical music. Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis opens the show.

Sunday

Soul on Ice
w/ DJ Co-op and Hunnicutt
Ice Rink at The Forks
Free

For the next three Sundays from 2-5pm (6-9pm on December 21st/08), local DJ duo, Co-Op and Hunnicutt, will be spinning their unique blend of funk, rare groove, mashups and old school hip hop at Soul on Ice, a free event at The Forks rink.

Other concerts worth checking out: Paper Moon (Thursday - Park Theatre), Tracking Success (Friday - The Academy), Tom Waits’ Birthday (Tuesday - Times Change(d))
