Winnipeg Free Press - Ben Klock

Ben Klock Berghain 04 (Ostgut Ton) When you typically play eight-hour marathon DJ sets in arguably the No. 1 club in the world, distilling that experience can be an almost impossible task. For the fourth instalment of German super-club Berghain’s influential mix series, resident DJ Ben Klock manages to weave together elements of what has defined the Berghain sound: stripped-down rhythms, hypnotic grooves, anything-goes after-hours techno and tension-filled house. Contrasting tracks by up-and-coming producers like Minneapolis’ DVS1 with old favourites like Tyree’s Nuthin Wrong from 1995, Klock acknowledges the past while looking ahead to the future. Despite the limitations of a mix CD, Klock’s subtle late-night textures, understated melodies, dark, pulsing rhythms and post-rave techno come together in a perfect home-listening package. 4 stars Republished from the Winnipeg Free Press print edition July 31, 2010 C4
